Quality Engineer – Curing Department

Job Summary

The Curing Quality Engineer helps ensure product and quality system integrity while implementing new products and processes and resolving product performance issues. Provides expertise and guidance in the creation, testing and evolution of rubber in the tire making process to guarantee product conformance to standards and requirements. The Calendaring Quality Engineer will work closely with production, quality and maintenance associates to ensure product conformity. Additional responsibilities will include conducting analysis and providing recommendations to improve and standardize processes and procedures.

Essential Duties & Functions

• Provide product criteria expertise

• Manage product improvement initiatives

• Provides expertise to site improvement team leaders and teams in the use of quality tools such as, Failure Modes and Defects Analysis (PFMEA), Design of experiments (DOE), process capability assessment and development, error-proofing, six sigma, lean manufacturing and Statistical Process Control (SPC) PPAP, MSA

• Will be able to plan, control and assure product and process quality in accordance with quality principles, which include planning processes, material control, acceptance sampling and measurement systems

• Investigate, analyze and resolve supplier quality problems by conducting audits, analyzing defect trends

• Lead continuous improvement projects

• Conduct DOE’s and capability studies to develop product and process parameters and assure robust processes

• Provides site QA engineering support as part of a site quality improvement/corrective action process teams. Lead investigations into product quality issues; institutionalize corrective actions

• Follows up on all customer complaints (Internal and external)

• Perform activities within the manufacturing process that involve issuing reports; conducting audits; issuing and dispositioning product holds; and maintaining/interpreting specifications related to product quality

• Carry out activities that involve facilitating development builds and trials, issuing product, process or material specifications, analyzing data, and conducting process and equipment trials related to improving manufacturing capability and competitiveness.

• Execute activities involving continuous improvement tools, analysis of product irregularities, recommending solutions and facilitating cost down initiatives related to improving product costs. (These duties would include training and instruction of appropriate team members and day-to-day floor support.)

• Identify and correct unacceptable performance through analysis and technical knowledge of the product and process including waste and cost reduction

• Perform any audits deemed necessary to improve activities that drive compliance to Product, Process, and Quality. This includes but is not limited to OEM, ISO/TS, mixing, process control, calendar and extruder audits

• Prepares advanced quality planning documents and participates and may lead in quality planning activities, including Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEA’s, Control Plans and Charts, MSA, Gage R & R studies and other capability studies

• Follow company policies as required

• Perform other duties of equal or less complexity as assigned or directed by management

• Assigned department process experience strongly preferred

• Must be safety & quality cautious

• Self –starter and ability to work well with minimal supervision

• Mechanical aptitude skills preferred

• Excellent interpersonal and communicative skills

• Ability to use appropriate computer-based technology

• Ability to understand technical drawings and procedures

• Demonstrated skill in solving complex product/process issues

• Ability to drive change through influencing within and across organizational boundaries

• Ability to train, mentor and clearly articulate statistical and quality / reliability concepts to project teams and to functional management

• Data driven and proactive

• Green Belt or Black Belt experience preferred

• ISO 9001 experience preferred

• SPC (Statistical Process Control) experience or training preferred

• ASQ (American Society of Quality Engineers) certification preferred

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position is not expected to have supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in Manufacturing

• Minimum 5 years of experience in a process development role using design of experiments and statistical analysis tools

• Practical hands on experience on process improvements using quality tools that may include but not limited to; Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Design of experiments (DOE), process capability assessment and development, error-proofing, six sigma, lean manufacturing and Statistical Process Control (SPC)

• Established track record of successful process development through the application of DFSS tools and familiar with stage/gate development process

• ASQ (American Society of Quality Engineers) certification preferred

• ISO 9001 experience preferred • Core Tools experience or training preferred

• Experience using lean or other methodologies to perform root cause analysis and development of corrective actions
