Schaeffler, a global automotive and industrial supplier, is seeking an
Application Engineer - Pulp & Paper / Paperboard to support our
Fort Mill, SC location. This position is responsible for
supporting the Regional Business Unit Manager in gaining market share. For qualified opportunities, provide competent, timely technical assistance to Schaeffler’s customers in the form of innovative and cost-effective bearing design proposals. The Application Engineer will strive to earn the customer’s confidence so Schaeffler becomes their primary technical resource for anti-friction bearing components.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Assist in obtaining all necessary application data and information in order to adequately formulate proposals and generate requisite calculations
- Evaluate all available design information, calculations and test results to ensure proposed components meet or exceed customer expectations
- Utilize Schaeffler’s BearinX software platform to facilitate advanced bearing calculations
- Submit bearing design proposals to customers in the form of written proposals, presentations and discussions. Play a part in the decision as to which format is best suited to a particular situation
- Work with product engineering to ensure designs are cost-effective
- Perform Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis to document thought process and to increase confidence in designs
- Identify testing and inspection requirements and approve inspected/tested prototypes prior to shipment to the customer
- Obtain and maintain general working knowledge of Schaeffler manufacturing processes, standards, and procedures
- Represent and promote Schaeffler and/or Schaeffler Engineering during visits to the customer, exhibitions, or on visits to Schaeffler by the customer
- Perform Returned Bearing Analyses on customer tested or warranty return components, which are deemed to be “application” related
- Strive for increased technical and specific industry sector knowledge through publications, discussions, participation in professional organization, and attending instructional presentations, workshops and or classes
- Maintain project files in accordance with department standards
- Accurately complete and maintain up-to-date Design Review forms and assume responsibility that these forms are adequately reviewed and approved
- Develop a working knowledge of the test lab equipment and practices
- Original Schaeffler/Investigate new designs, concepts, or manufacturing processes that could reduce cost and improve quality and/or performance
- Provide technical support to Schaeffler sales/marketing organization and customer service department as requested
- Review and approve all samples under his/her responsibility
- Manage multiple project simultaneously and drive to completion using project management methods
- Establish and maintain relationships with key engineering contacts at customers and field sales through frequent travel
- Travel targeted at 25%
Qualified candidates will have:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum of 3 years Application Engineering experience
- Pulping operations, paper / paperboard mill, wood pelletizing, saw-mill equipment application experience desired
- Experience in MRO, repair, and overhaul of paper machine bearings highly desirable
- Bearing application experience is a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Intermediate level of engineering knowledge, experience and creativity such that by applying standard techniques and basic methods, detailed work assignments and routine projects can be handled
- Require a minimum of supervision except in areas, which are of a unique aspect
- Project management experience
- Proficiency of Planisware or WindChill software platforms is beneficial
