Minimum Training & Experience
Requires an Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in engineering, architecture, inspection, drafting, construction technology or related field.
Requires four years in commercial and residential building inspection or closely related experience.
The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of construction and inspection methods and practices used in various types and stages of construction when possible defects and violations may be easily observed and corrected.
Knowledge of defects and flaws in construction and construction materials and effective corrective measures.
Knowledge of codes, regulations, specifications, and ordinances governing the construction process.
Ability to recognize conditions likely to result in collapse or failure of facilities and structures under construction.
Ability to read construction plans and specifications and recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process.
Ability to communicate and present ideas effectively, orally and in writing, and to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
Ability to perform basic computer data entry.
Ability to respond to emergency calls after normal work hours and on the weekends.
Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions
Informs and educates the public on the specific code requirements, as well as provide potential program options that may help resolve outstanding code violations.
Proactively surveys, reviews, and inspects structures and properties for violations of the International Property Maintenance Code, City Municipal Code, and Zoning Ordinance, while working towards achieving compliance with the responsible parties.
Follows specific procedures for the code violation type to ensure proper notices and timelines are sent to responsible parties in an effort to alleviate code violations.
Prepares and manages case files to accurately capture the violation(s). Case files must be properly maintained to show all documents, photographs, correspondence, and follow-up inspection results.
Responds to calls, emails, or other inquiries or complaints in a timely manner.
Organizes follow-up inspections for compliance of code violations to determine if the citied party has alleviated the violation.
Initiates housing and demolition processes as directed by the Code Official.
Works closely with the Code Official for permitting, placarding, and managing projects.
Accepts tasks that benefit the overall objective of the division, which is to eliminate blight.
Assist with certain program initiatives that directly benefit the Inspections Division when necessary.
Performs all other duties as assigned to meet organizational needs.
